After receiving a bunch of emails from Greenpeace and reading some articles on their website, I made this topic because I can't help but feel guilty, angry and sorry for ourselves at the same time. Something has to be done about all this environmental destruction.

So if you have any news about the environment or Global Warming, please post it here! Everyone needs to know. Maybe that's the only way people will realize what they're doing.

Remember as Apl.d.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas said "Just realize that you can change the world by changing yourself"

Quote:

Unilever’s suppliers are actively clearing Indonesia’s peat lands and rain forests, and destroying orangutan and wildlife habitats in the process. Destruction of Indonesia’s peat land rain forests contributes 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Early morning Monday April 21st, Unilever’s workers in the UK, the Netherlands and Italy, were greeted by our very own screeching orang-utans clambering over their headquarters. The orang-utans aim? To highlight one of the biggest environmental crimes of our time – the destruction of their homes for, amongst other things, our beauty products.

The destruction of the world’s rainforests and peatlands to make way for increased palm-oil plantations is driving climate change and pushing species, such as the orang-utan, to the brink of extinction. Every time the rainforest is trashed, huge amounts of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. The destruction of rainforests accounts for a fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions – that’s more than all the planes, trains and cars in the world.

Rampant expansion of palm oil plantations is the leading cause of rainforest destruction in Indonesia. Unilever, as the world’s biggest consumer of palm oil, is driving this expansion and as a result is fuelling rainforest destruction. For every 20 litres of palm oil produced in Indonesia, one litre ends up in Unilever’s hands.

The main problem is that Unilever continues to buy palm oil from dodgy suppliers who burn rainforest and drain peatlands that are protected under Indonesian law to clear space for more plantations. Having lost their homes, orang-utans are forced to look elsewhere for food and often palm plantations are the nearest source. It’s estimated that over 1600 orang-utans were killed on palm oil plantations in 2006 alone.

They We need to act fast – orangutan numbers have already declined by 90 percent and time to save the climate is running out. It’s going to take serious and fast action by the big corporate players, like Unilever, as well as the political clout of governments to deliver the sorts of changes we need to see. With your help, we'll continue to keep up the pressure on Unilever and other companies to make sure we see real action on the ground and an end to rainforest destruction.

Please click here to sign a campaign against all of this. Imagine how many orangutans you can save! :)

* PS / Nikki, I know I made a topic about Global Warming, but this one's about ANYTHING environmental :) But feel free to lock if you think I should stick to my Global Warming place.

EDITED:

I just visited the Greenpeace website and found this article!

Quote:
International — Despite insisting a week ago that they wouldn’t be bounced into taking action, Unilever boss, Patrick Cescau performed a swift about turn today and announced that his company is supporting our call for a moratorium – a complete halt – on rainforest destruction in Indonesia.

A moratorium would buy time, and allow proper regulations to be put in place that protect the rainforest in years to come. Unilever’s announcement is potentially good news for orang-utans and for the climate.

Speaking at the May Day Climate Change Summit attended by Prince Charles and the UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, he also promised that all of Unilever’s palm oil would be sustainably sourced by 2015. Although we’ve already warned him that promises of sustainable palm oil will amount to nothing unless Unilever’s suppliers stop trashing Indonesia’s rainforests. Now we want to see some of the other big palm oil buyers, like Nestle and Procter & Gamble, join with Unilever to create change on the ground.

Only last week, we launched a new campaign asking Unilever, the company behind some of the world’s most famous brands including Dove, to join us in pushing for a moratorium on rainforest destruction in Indonesia.

One crisis *almost* solved! HOORAY! But still, keep supporting the campaign :)

New Greenpeace report exposes CCS as a dangerous distraction

Greenpeace International has released a new report, entitled “False Hope: Why Carbon Capture and Storage Won’t Save the Climate,” which proves once and for all that “clean coal” is nothing more than a slogan aimed at greenwashing the image of an irremediably dirty energy source.

The premise of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is that carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants can be captured before it enters the atmosphere and then stored underground in geological formations. The coal industry has been promoting the idea of “clean coal” through the usage of CCS technology as a solution for global warming despite the fact that its efficacy has yet to be proven on a large scale and even best-case scenarios don’t have CCS being in place for at least a couple decades.

Greenpeace’s new report systematically debunks all of the coal industry’s claims about CCS, demonstrating that we have no time to waste on this dubious technology if we are to avert the most drastic effects of global warming.

"Carbon capture and storage is a scam. It is the ultimate coal industry pipe dream,” said the report’s author, Emily Rochon, climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace International. “Governments and businesses need to reduce their emissions—not search for excuses to keep burning coal.”

The report exposes CCS technology’s woeful inadequacy on numerous points. CCS wastes energy, for one thing, as it uses between 10 and 40% of the plant’s power output just to function. It is also expensive, and could possibly double the cost of constructing a coal-fired power plant, which in turn could lead to the raising of electricity costs for consumers. And despite its exorbitant cost, there is actually no guarantee that storing carbon underground is totally safe or effective – even a very low leakage rate could completely undermine the benefits of CCS. But most importantly, CCS simply can’t deliver on a large scale until 2030, according to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, whereas the scientific consensus about climate change holds that our greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2015 if we’re to avoid the worst effects of man-made global warming.

“There is an immediate window for the U.S. to address the most urgent effects of global warming, and CCS is a dangerous distraction from real solutions,” said Kate Smolski, legislative coordinator for Greenpeace USA.

The release of this report is especially timely, as the U.S. Congress will soon debate global warming legislation that could increase give-a-ways to the coal industry and waste taxpayer dollars on this unproven and potentially dangerous technology. It is vitally important that we do not let ourselves be duped by this global warming distraction: Every dollar spent on CCS technology is a dollar not available for clean and proven technologies such as wind and solar.

OMGawd . I've read this at Greenpeace and I've shockingly discovered that CCS [Carbon Capture and Storage] affects mother nature aka the world which we are living bcoss this case is a huge affection of global warming that should be stopped . If this won't be stopped then this will happen:

^ Okay, I didn't understand any of that O_O but DUNDUNDUN!

People keep raising prices for products because their sources are
getting harder to find. But raising prices isn't going to help them
get their resources back, so why won't they do stuff about it?

I swear, people are getting dumber every generation xD
Sometimes the solutions to problems are right in front of us and we're
just to caught up to just grab them :(

Flapperjackers.

If you're from the Philippines (which I know most of you are) I think
you should try watching Planet Green. I saw a commercial for
it on Discovery Channel :) I haven't watched it yet, but it sounds cool! In the Philippines it airs every Wednesday at 10pm.

Okay, this is the 3rd time I'm editing this post. Here's an article I found
about Starbucks.

Quote:
Vote For Starbucks To Recycle Plastic
Though Starbucks successfully creates a caffeine buzz, they haven't successfully mastered the craft of being green--even when easy eco-efforts are right under their java-filled nose. Case and point: The chain offers recyclable plastic cold cups but fails to educate their consumers about them. They've also forgotten to outfit their stores with recycling bins. That's a lot of plastic piling up in our landfills!

Planet Green reader, Rose, couldn't slurp back another Venti latte without doing something, so on Starbucks' reader suggestion site, she put out a call for action asking for store-wide recycling bins and product-based consumer awareness. Help Rose get her message to the coffee bean big shots by placing your vote here.

Starbucks sounds like a good place to start recycling since hundreds of people
love going to Starbucks for coffee. Plus it's a good way to let people
be aware of this stuff! :)

Has anyone of you watched The Inconvinient Truth?
It's about global warming, really interesting.
It's actually a documentary, kinda boring for some of you.

than just using recyclable cups.

i agree! they should also educate
their costumers of proper waste disposal.

i just came home from Manila,
( the capital of the Philippines )
and the SMOG (smoke && fog ) was soo thick!
it was soo black as if there was a storm.
you can see the smoke from powerplants go in the air!

also, i saw a security guard of some mall,
throw a candy wrapper in the street,
though the trash can was near him.
i mean, very near! like 3 inches away from him!
he also threw a gum in the plant box!
talk about disgusting!

People are just too sloppy these days .
They only think about theirselves and not
their environment surrounding them .

You're right, Ani and Louise!
Bcoss Ii don't think they really DO know how
to recycle . Coss if they do, then they would
probably recycling by now, and not disposing
their trash to a place where it could make the
environment unseenly to the eyes . What Ii mean
is, it doesn't look like environmental friendly anymore,
it just looks like trash .
